Launched in January 2016, the Arpan Project brought warmth and dignity to over 200 people in Kudlum, Purulia — one of REWA’s earliest large-scale community outreach efforts. More than 500 clothes and snacks were distributed across the community during the initiative.
Alongside the clothing and food distribution, REWA also gifted traditional Bengali bangles specifically to married women in the community — a deliberate choice to honor local cultural traditions rather than treat the distribution as a purely material exercise.
How REWA Made an Impact
This project reflects a principle that has carried through REWA’s work ever since: giving isn’t just about meeting basic material needs, it’s also about honoring the identity, culture, and dignity of the people being served. The inclusion of the Bengali bangles turned a standard relief distribution into a gesture of genuine cultural respect.
For many of the 200+ people reached, this initiative provided not just practical items for the cold season, but a visible reminder that an outside organization saw and respected who they were as a community.
